26 of the most common questions Valley homeowners ask us — answered the way we'd explain it to a neighbor.

Tree Removal

Tree Removal questions

How much does tree removal cost in Phoenix?

+

Most residential removals run $400–$2,500 depending on size, species, access, and proximity to structures. A 25-foot mesquite over open lawn is very different from a 50-foot eucalyptus over a pool deck. We give flat-rate written quotes after a free on-site walk-through.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree?

+

On private residential property in most Phoenix-metro cities, no — except for protected species (saguaro, ironwood, palo verde, mesquite native stands) on lots that fall under native plant ordinances. We confirm before we cut and pull any required permit on your behalf.

Can you remove a tree near my house, pool, or block wall?

+

Yes — that's most of what we do. We use rigging, crane assist when needed, and tight-access climbing techniques to drop trees in pieces with zero damage to roofs, fences, pools, or hardscape.

Will you grind the stump too?

+

Yes, as an add-on to any removal. We grind 6 inches below grade by default (deeper on request for replanting), haul the chips, and leave the area ready for sod, decomposed granite, or a new tree.

How fast can you respond to an emergency?

+

Storm-damaged or hazard trees usually get a same-day or next-day response. Members get 24-hour priority during major monsoon events.

Tree Pruning

Tree Pruning questions

When is the best time to prune in Phoenix?

+

Late winter (January–February) for most desert trees — it minimizes stress, sap loss, and pest exposure. Pre-monsoon thinning (May–June) is the second priority window, specifically to reduce wind sail before storm season.

How much should you remove in a single prune?

+

Never more than 25% of the live canopy in one season — and usually closer to 15% on mature desert trees. Over-pruning ("hat-racking" or topping) causes stress sprouts, sun scald, and long-term decline. We follow ANSI A300 standards.

What is structural pruning?

+

Cuts made to develop or maintain a strong central leader and well-spaced scaffold branches. Done early in a tree's life, it prevents the weak unions and co-dominant stems that fail in monsoon storms 20 years later.

Why do my trees keep falling over in monsoons?

+

Usually one of three things: an overbuilt canopy that catches wind like a sail, shallow roots from chronic over-watering, or a weak union that finally let go. Pre-monsoon thinning addresses the first; the other two need diagnosis on site.

Stump Grinding

Stump Grinding questions

How deep do you grind a stump?

+

Standard grind is 6 inches below grade — enough to lay sod, decomposed granite, or a small planter. For replanting a new tree in the same spot we grind 12–18 inches and remove larger lateral roots.

Do you haul the wood chips away?

+

Yes by default. Some homeowners ask us to leave the chips on site for mulch — that's free if you want it.

Will the roots keep growing after grinding?

+

No — once the trunk and root collar are ground out, the remaining lateral roots cannot push new growth and will decompose over 3–7 years. Suckering species (mulberry, ailanthus, palms) sometimes need a follow-up; we include a one-time return visit if that happens.

Can you grind stumps in tight backyards?

+

Yes. Our smallest grinder fits through a 36-inch gate. We protect lawns and pavers with plywood mats.

Storm & Emergency

Storm & Emergency questions

Do you respond after monsoon storms?

+

Yes — storm response is one of our busiest seasons. Members and prior customers get 24-hour priority. New customers typically get same- or next-day service depending on storm severity.

Will my insurance cover storm-damaged trees?

+

If a tree damaged a structure (roof, fence, vehicle), most homeowner policies cover removal of the limb that did the damage. We provide photo documentation and reports for claims.

What if a tree is leaning on my house right now?

+

Call us immediately. We rig and remove leaners off structures using crane support or sectional climbing — it's safer, faster, and avoids the secondary damage that comes from waiting.

Tree Health & Pests

Tree Health & Pests questions

Why is my mesquite oozing dark sap?

+

Almost always slime flux (a bacterial fermentation in stressed wood) or borer activity. Slime flux is mostly cosmetic; borers can be fatal. We diagnose on site and recommend treatment vs. removal honestly.

What's eating my palo verde?

+

Most likely palo verde root borer beetles or mistletoe in the canopy. Both are treatable in early stages. Mature root borer infestation usually means the tree's structural integrity is already compromised.

Do you treat sooty canker?

+

Yes — it's one of the most common diseases on mulberry, ash, and cottonwood in the Valley. Treatment is aggressive sanitation pruning, sealing all cuts, and disinfecting tools between trees. Severe cases require removal to prevent spread.
